BREAKFAST

The ultimate outdoor breakfast

After the mistake of bringing 15 identical packages of freeze-dried muesli for breakfast on the Coast to Coast trail, we vowed never to do it that way again. We grew tired of the freeze-dried meal after just two days, and the calorie content wasn’t even that impressive. After extensive testing, we believe we’ve found the best outdoor breakfast out there. It only weighs 100-150 grams, requires very little water, and provides about 1000 kcal. Below, we will share the recipe with you.

Ingredients and requirements

To make this outdoor breakfast, you’ll need a vacuum machine and suitable plastic bags. We found a machine at Lidl for about 30 euros and buy rolls of plastic on different websites. A digital scale can be useful for measuring purposes.

For ingredients, purchase the following:

– Your favorite cookie (Oreo, chocolate chips, etc. No waffles or similar items)
– Protein powder
– Emergency rations (NR5 or another brand)
– Cruesli (easily crushable and high in calories)
– Milk powder (might want to buy this online, since it can be hard to find in supermarkets)

Crushing and mixing

To prepare our breakfast, your first step is to crush the cruesli, weetabix and emergency rations blocks into bits.   A blender works well for this and saves you some time. Note: don’t mix it just yet.
The second step is to mix everything using the ratio below:

Ratio for one breakfast

(+/- 1000kcal) change according to your own appetite.
– 40 grams of cruesli (make sure it has a neutral flavor)
– 20 grams of weetabix
– 1 block of emergency ration, any brand will work.
– 15 grams of (whey) proteïn powder

The last step is to add your favourite cookie until the total weight equals 150 grams.
Use different cookies to create different flavours.

Be sure to let us know when you find good combinations! 😀

Packaging

After measuring it all out using your scale, it’s time to wrap up your breakfasts. Grab your roll of plastic and cut them into pieces of around 20cm. It’s important to leave some space in the bag since you have to add water, and you don’t want it to spill out. First, seal one of the sides, making it a small bag. Then, put in your breakfast. Finally, vacuum-seal the other side of the bag, and you are done!
Enjoy!
